  • #234 – Stage A

    5″ Mouth 3″ Rings
    ½” Raised Snaffle

This bit is designed to decrease the discomfort at the corners of the horse’s mouth. It will not pinch. The extra 3” rings at each end of the mouthpiece float independently to disperse the pressure across the lip and cheeks to make the horse more responsive to the rider’s cue. The raised snaffle offers less tongue pressure for better feel at the bars and lips. Attach the reins to the floating dee outside the cheek rings.

Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse and makes the bit more acceptable and increases salivation for a supple mouth.

    #123-525 – 5 ¼” mouth, 3″ rings
    #123-550 – 5 ½” mouth, 3″rings

Copper creates moisture to keep your horse’s mouth soft and supple, packs well, and keeps well in high salt areas. The ⅜” is perfect for an all-around mouth.

  • #149 – Medium rings 5 1/4″ Mouth

The combination of this popular mouthpiece and medium ring makes for a great bit when you need a little quicker response. The copper roller can help quiet a nervous horse and adds slight tongue pressure for a better head set. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse and makes the bit more acceptable and increases salivation for a supple mouth. Mullen relief is used on all our snaffle mouthpieces which is a forward curve that creates even pressure across the bars and tongue to eliminate the nutcracker effect.

  • #271A –  Stage A

    Offset Dee ⅜” Twisted Dogbone
    Snaffle 5” Mouth 3” Dee

The Van Hargis Progressive Bit System was designed to gradually transition a horse from the two-handed direct rein communication of the Van Hargis Off-set D-ring snaffle to the subtle one-handed refined communication of the mild and comfortable Van Hargis All-Around Performance bit. Each bit further refines communication and prepares the horse for the next step of performance until the ultimate in communication and performance is achieved. This is a system of champions for champions.

The Sweet Iron Twisted Three-Piece Dogbone Snaffle is another carefully thought out bit with the same design as 271, but with twisted sweet iron for refinement. It boasts the same D-ring characteristic and the same palatable sweet iron steel yet it has a three-piece mouth. Unlike most dogbone designs, I have shortened the length of the centerpiece. This design still sends an easily detectable signal to the corners of the horse’s mouth but virtually eliminates the possibility of bumping the palate when both reins are used simultaneously.

    GOLDEN GLIDE BUSHINGS –
    • Further enhance the smoothness of the independent cheek movement allowing for more precise cues
    • Eliminate the cheek connection from pinching the horse’s lips
    • Smooths the movement of the cheek piece for better feel and performance

“Whether I’m starting a young horse, tuning a performance horse or helping a horse overcome an issue, my first choice of bit is my smooth-mouth offset d-ring snaffle by Reinsman. With this bit, there’s no chance of ever pinching a horse’s cheeks because they are made with a unique brass bushing between the bit mount and the stainless steel d-rings.” – Van Hargis

Van Hargis is a horseman with a message. He is of today’s most versatile horsemen, a designation that reflects a lifetime devoted to learning-and communicating-the elements of superior horsemanship as applied in a variety of disciplines.

  • #201 – Stage A

    ⅜” Smooth Sweet Iron Snaffle
    5″ Mouth 3″ Rings

This Western Dee is a great choice when you want a more direct signal than you get with a loose ring snaffle. The Dee ring applies pressure to the horse’s cheeks on the opposite side of the face from the rein you pull, allowing for better flexion. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse, making the bit more acceptable and increasing salivation for a supple mouth. Mullen relief is used on all our snaffle mouthpieces which is a forward curve that creates even pressure across the bars and tongue to eliminate the nutcracker effect.

    #232-550 –  5 ½” Mouth, 3″ Rings

This bit was designed to decrease the discomfort at the corners of the horse’s mouth. This bit will not pinch. The extra 3” rings at each end of the mouthpiece float independently to disperse the pressure across the lip and cheeks making the horse more responsive to the riders cues. Attach the rein to the floating dee ring outside the cheek’s ring. The mouthpiece is large enough to allow the rider to pull on a horse without injuring the bars.

    7/16″ Large Twisted Sweet Iron
    Snaffle 5″ Mouth 3″ Rings

  • #181 – Stage A

    ⅜” Twisted Copper Snaffle
    5″ Mouth 3″ Rings

This snaffle bit should be a top choice when using a twisted snaffle. The combination of the slightly weighted ring with a ⅜” twisted snaffle makes this bit perfectly balanced for training and every day riding. The weight of the ring increases feel for both the horse and rider, giving the horse pre-signals to rein cues and providing clearer communication. Copper tastes sour to the horse (similar to a green apple) and will increase salivation. This makes the bit more comfortable for the horse and leads to a relaxed jaw and acceptance of the bit. Copper is a soft metal, check for signs of wear before each use. Mullen relief is used on all our snaffle mouthpieces which is a forward curve that creates even pressure across the bars and tongue to eliminate the nutcracker effect.

One of the nicest all around ring snaffles. Sweet iron creates moisture for a wet, soft mouth. Large enough to pack well, yet small enough to have good control. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse, making the bit more acceptable and increasing salivation for a supple mouth.
