Harness leather. Slobber straps are a great multipurpose item. They’re used as a training tool to add weight to the rein and give a quicker release, and reduce wear-and-tear. These slobber straps are designed to be used with a bit that has 2” or larger rings so there is room for the slobber straps to function properly. Designed for use with rope reins.

  • 273 Van Hargis Transition Series #2
    7/16″ Tapered Sweet Iron Snaffle
    8″ Swivel Cheek 5″ Mouth
    Stage B

The Van Hargis Transition Series is incredibly effective and is simplicity at its finest.  From the Van Hargis Offset D-Ring Snaffle to the Van Hargis Solid Cheek Curb bit, the key is keeping as many things as familiar as possible to the horse while gradually progressing to ultimate performance; step by step and bit by bit.

This curb bit has the same mouth piece as the VH Offset D-ring Snaffle.  It is the first curb bit used after the snaffle.  Just like the snaffle, the sweet iron mouth has an easy tapered curve to promote an easily detectable signal while being comfortable and palatable to the horse. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse and makes the bit more acceptable and increases salivation for a supple mouth. Mullen relief is used on all our snaffle mouthpieces which is a forward curve that creates even pressure across the bars and tongue to eliminate the nutcracker effect.

Van Hargis is a horseman with a message. He is of today’s most versatile horsemen, a designation that reflects a lifetime devoted to learning-and communicating-the elements of superior horsemanship as applied in a variety of disciplines.

Moving from Direct Reining to Neck Reining? Stage B is all about transition, with the introduction of leverage and curb pressure. Short shanked bits and half-gags comprise Stage B.

Reinsman’s Handshake Promise is a lifetime bit warranty from craftsmanship defects: Our commitment to you is to build the highest quality products from the best materials. Reinsman bits are warrantied to be free of craftsmanship defects throughout its useful life.

  • #271A –  Stage A

    Offset Dee ⅜” Twisted Dogbone
    Snaffle 5” Mouth 3” Dee

The Van Hargis Progressive Bit System was designed to gradually transition a horse from the two-handed direct rein communication of the Van Hargis Off-set D-ring snaffle to the subtle one-handed refined communication of the mild and comfortable Van Hargis All-Around Performance bit. Each bit further refines communication and prepares the horse for the next step of performance until the ultimate in communication and performance is achieved. This is a system of champions for champions.

The Sweet Iron Twisted Three-Piece Dogbone Snaffle is another carefully thought out bit with the same design as 271, but with twisted sweet iron for refinement. It boasts the same D-ring characteristic and the same palatable sweet iron steel yet it has a three-piece mouth. Unlike most dogbone designs, I have shortened the length of the centerpiece. This design still sends an easily detectable signal to the corners of the horse’s mouth but virtually eliminates the possibility of bumping the palate when both reins are used simultaneously.

Are You Riding with Both Hands? Stage A bits are great for starting horses, training, or maintaining steady contact. Aspects include direct reining, non-leverage Loose Rings and Dee Rings with mouthpiece diameters 5/16” and over.

    GOLDEN GLIDE BUSHINGS –
    • Further enhance the smoothness of the independent cheek movement allowing for more precise cues
    • Eliminate the cheek connection from pinching the horse’s lips
    • Smooths the movement of the cheek piece for better feel and performance

“Whether I’m starting a young horse, tuning a performance horse or helping a horse overcome an issue, my first choice of bit is my smooth-mouth offset d-ring snaffle by Reinsman. With this bit, there’s no chance of ever pinching a horse’s cheeks because they are made with a unique brass bushing between the bit mount and the stainless steel d-rings.” – Van Hargis

  • #270 – Stage A

    Offset 7/16” Dee Tapered Sweet
Iron Snaffle 5″ Mouth 3″ Dee

The Van Hargis Progressive Bit System was designed to gradually transition a horse from the two-handed direct rein communication of the Van Hargis Off-set D-ring snaffle to the subtle one-handed refined communication of the mild and comfortable Van Hargis All-Around Performance bit. Each bit further refines communication and prepares the horse for the next step of performance until the ultimate in communication and performance is achieved. This is a system of champions for champions.

The Sweet Iron Two-Piece Snaffle is the first bit I use on practically every horse I ride and the one bit I come back to whenever a communication problem arises. This bit was designed to be heavy, balanced and communicative. The stainless steel D-rings give the bit eye appeal and ease of maintenance. The barrels at the corners of the horse’s mouth are carefully designed and enhanced with a special bushing to ensure long-term smoothness to eliminating any possible chance of pinching. The sweet iron two-piece mouth has an easy practical curve to promote an easily detectable signal from the rider while being comfortable and palatable to the horse.

  • 1/2″ Sweet Iron High Port
    Van Hargis Transition Series #6
    8″ Solid Cheek 5″ Mouth
    Stage D

The Van Hargis Transition Series is incredibly effective and is simplicity at its finest.  From the Van Hargis Offset D-Ring Snaffle to the Van Hargis Solid Cheek Curb bit, the key is keeping as many things as familiar as possible to the horse while gradually progressing to ultimate performance; step by step and bit by bit.

This is the same bit as the VH Transition Bit #5 except with solid cheeks. This shank does not swivel and is for the more advanced horse. It may take many months, but in most cases years to get a horse to the stage I ride a horse in a full bridle. By the time I get a horse to this point, he is so soft and responsive to any bit I use. He is stable in the shoulders and has achieved lightness and a balance that affords him the ability to perform any performance task while being strong and straight. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse and makes the bit more acceptable and increases salivation for a supple mouth.

Are We Talking or Whispering? Stage D is about refinement, subtle cues and quick communication. Characteristics include increased leverage, more sophisticated mouthpieces, and may also incorporate higher ports.

Van Hargis is a horseman with a message. He is one of today’s most versatile horsemen, a designation that reflects a lifetime devoted to learning-and communicating-the elements of superior horsemanship as applied in a variety of disciplines.
